Bird of Paradise

This easy going plant is a great anchor to any indoor garden. It produces large luxurious leaves all year round. The leaves naturally split when hit by strong wind so tears along the seams do not hurt the plant. They tend to grow into large plants so be wary of where they are placed.

Environment

  • Light tolerant but likes bright direct light
  • Likes warm humid environments
  • Do not let the environment go below 60 F or 15 C

Wipe the leaves from time to time with a moist towel to clear off any dust that gathered on the leaves.

Water and Soil

  • Keep soil moist but not drenched in summer and drier in the winter
  • Roots should not sit in wet soil, easy to develop root rot.
  • Sensitive to hard water
  • Fertilize once a month during growing months

If the leaves are turning brown, this could be a sign of hard water. Let tap water sit overnight to evaporate some of the chlorine and fluoride. Allow the soil to dry between waterings.

Potting and Pruning

As the plant grows, we can prune the older leaves as they naturally wilt. The root mass may sprout additional stems. When repotting, we can use a knife to cleanly separate the divisions into different containers for propogation.
