temperature

Controlling temperature is a tricky thing. While humans can often deal with drafts and breezes that condition our space, plants are often much more sensitive. Heat gain through glass windows and drafts from air conditioning can make an area of our home drastically different in climate. Plants will often indicate when the air around them is uncomfortable, watch for these signs and move the plants appropriately.

Most houseplants will do well in temperatures around 60 to 75 degrees as they originate from equatorial climates.

Some plants like even temperatures while other need a temperature cycle either daily or seasonally. Some flowering plants require a warm day and cold night to encourage flowering. Plants that shed leaves and go through a dormant season usually need cool temperatures and lower light.

We are generally trying to approximate the natural conditions that the plant would have had in the wild. By understanding microclimates within our space and moving plants accordingly, we can bring the tropics to indoor New York with little issue.
